A really fast character portrait of Offred from The Handmaid's Tale. I drew the majority of it at Denny's, of all places.

I love this book. I can't even count how many times I've read it, and saying that I reread it once a year is a conservative estimate. It's incredible, and it's terrifying because it's feasible.

Not happy with the basket/arm/sleeve, but it's not getting fixed now.

This is beautiful! I'm reading this book for the first time and it's the scariest thing I've ever read.

Thank you for a good visual on the outfit. I haven't even finished the book and yet I'm in love with it. And I don't mean to be rude, but don't they wear white gloves, not red? Just wondering.

=) I had to check, but nope, they're certainly red:

"I get up out of the chair, advance my feet into the sunlight, in their red shoes, flat-heeled to save the spine and not for dancing. The red gloves are lying on the bed. I pick them up, pull them onto my hands, finger by finger. Everything except the wings around my face is red: the color of blood, which defines us."

Okay. I checked a part of the book, just to double check for me, and they are red. Sorry.

This is really a fantastic drawing. Her eyes are closed in such a way so that she almost looks as though she doesn't have eyes at all. That's creepy, but it's also effective. The look of the drawing also somewhat resembles old paintings (like Renaissance-ish style, not really, hopefully you get what I mean). Yeah. Great drawing.

This is exactly how I imagined the outfit. I read the whole book for english in less than a week and I was amazed at how confusing and demoralising the whole story is ... especially when the japanese tourists came by and they looked so normal compared to the handmaids old-fashioned attire
